Antiviral Rasam
Author: Sneha | April 12, 2020
Selavu Rasam or antiviral rasam is good for health, especially when we are down with cold and cough.
Even in the normal days we can make this rasam just to have a different variety
instead of traditional rasam. Rasam goes in many flavors like lemon rasam, mint rasam, paruppu rasam, garlic rasam and horse gram rasam, which i would like to cover in my future posts but i mostly swear by this antiviral rasam because i have seen it doing magics whenever my daughter is down with cold and cough.
Ingredients:
1) Tomato -2
2)Red onion - 1/2
2 Garlic cloves -10
3)Coriander and Cumin - one spoon each
4)Curry leaves - few
5)Coriander leaves - few
6)Rasam powder - 1/4 spoon
7)Pepper- one teaspoon
8)Red chilli -2
9)Soaked tamarind residue - one spoon(Optional)
Directions:
1)Pour oil in the pan; Add the red onion, red chillies, pepper, coriander and cumin seeds and fry for some time. Grind this along with turmeric powder to a fine paste.
2)Pour oil in the pan and saute tomatoes till mushy. Add green chilli (Optional) for flavoring.
3)Pour in the grinded paste and saute for 2-3 mins.

4)Add some water and let it simmer
5)Add a teaspoon of tamarind if u like to preserve it or freeze it for two days. This is optional step.
6)Crush garlic and add the same to the boiling rasam. This is to ensure garlic essence stays intact with the recipe instead of having it cooked completely.

6)In a separate pan, add oil and drop mustard seeds, curry leaves and a pinch of asafoetida. Add this to the rasam which will give nice aroma.
I have restrained from using counter medicines for cold and cough for my family by following this recipe. Now, selavu rasam has become a regular part of our meal plan. No wonder for a reason i would like to call it as Magical Antiviral Rasam.
Sides to go with rasam:
1)Pappad
2)Chicken fry
3)Fish
4)Potato fry
5)Omlet
Note: For kids, this would be too hot. So proportionate rice in large quantity and rasam in smaller quantity while feeding.
